Spectral implementation of an adaptive moving mesh method for phase-field equations

چکیده
Phase-field simulations have been extensively applied to modeling microstructure evolution during various materials processes. However, large-scale simulations of three-dimensional (3D) microstructures are still computationally expensive. Among recent efforts to develop advanced numerical algorithms, the semi-implicit Fourier spectral method is found to be particularly efficient for systems involving long-range interactions as it is able to utilize the fast Fourier transforms (FFT) on uniform grids. In this paper, we report our recent progress in making grid points spatially adaptive in the physical domain via a moving mesh strategy, while maintaining a uniform grid in the computational domain for the spectral implementation. This approach not only provides more accurate treatment at the interfaces requiring higher resolution, but also retains the numerical efficiency of the semi-implicit Fourier spectral method. Numerical examples using the new adaptive moving mesh semi-implicit Fourier spectral method are presented for both two and three space dimensional microstructure simulations, and they are compared with those obtained by other methods. By maintaining a similar accuracy, the proposed method is shown to be far more efficient than the existing methods for microstructures with small ratios of interfacial widths to the domain size. 2006 Elsevier Inc. We develop in this paper a moving mesh spectral method for the phase-field model of twophase flows with non-periodic boundary conditions. The method is based on a variational moving mesh PDE for the phase function, coupled with efficient semi-implicit treatments for advancing the mesh function, the phase function and the velocity and pressure in a decoupled manner. In this paper we describe an adaptive moving mesh technique and its application to reaction-diffusion models from chemistry. The method is based on a coordinate transformation between physical and computational coordinates. The transformation can be viewed as a solution of adaptive mesh partial differential equations (PDEs) which is derived from the minimization of a mesh-energy integral. For a...

In this paper, a moving mesh technique and a non-standard finite difference method are combined, and a moving mesh non-standard finite difference (MMNSFD) method is developed to solve an initial boundary value problem involving a quartic nonlinearity that arises in heat transfer with thermal radiation. In this method, the moving spatial grid is obtained by a simple geometric adaptive algorithm ...
متن کاملMesh sensitivity for numerical solutions of phase-field equa- tions using r-adaptive finite element methods
There have been several recent works on developing moving mesh methods for solving phase-field equations. However, it is observed that some of these moving mesh solutions are essentially different with the solutions on very fine fixed meshes. One of the purposes of this work is to understand the reason for the differences. We carried out numerical sensitivity studies systematically in this pape...
